Acclaimed naturalist Williams centers her memoir of faith and creativity around the 15th-century GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS by Hieronymus Bosch, two-thirds of which hung over her bed as a child to remind her of the reality of paradise and hell. As an adult, Williams examines her continuing fascination with the painting as well as her continuing struggles with the faith that both introduced her to the painting and suppressed the one-third of it that represented erotic earthly existence.
